Rules Questions

How many marbles do I need to push off to win?

In the standard game, you need to push six of your opponent's marbles off the board to win.

Can I push my own marbles?

No, you cannot push your own marbles. You can only push your opponent's marbles, and only when you have numerical superiority in a line (e.g., 3 vs 2, 3 vs 1, or 2 vs 1).

What is a "Sumito"?

A "Sumito" is when you push your opponent's marbles with numerical superiority. For example, a 3-2 sumito means you're using three of your marbles to push two of your opponent's marbles.

What are the different starting positions?

The standard starting position has each player's marbles in two rows on opposite sides of the board. Alternative setups include the Belgian Daisy (flower-like formations), German Daisy, and Snake formation.

Strategy Questions

What are some basic strategies for beginners?

For beginners, focus on keeping your marbles connected, controlling the center of the board, and creating groups of three marbles that can push your opponent's pairs or single marbles. Avoid having isolated marbles that can be easily pushed off.

How important is the center of the board?

The center of the board is very important as it provides more mobility and options for your marbles. Controlling the center allows you to threaten multiple directions and makes it harder for your opponent to push your marbles.

Should I focus on offense or defense?

A balanced approach is usually best. Focus on creating strong formations that are difficult to attack while looking for opportunities to push your opponent's vulnerable marbles. As you gain experience, you'll develop a feel for when to be more aggressive or defensive.
